Time Slips

The excerpts below are from various articles found online -
Note: My mother experienced a time slip before... and back then we had no idea they even existed... but I'll save that for a separate post.

- A time slip (also called a timeslip) is an alleged paranormal phenomenon in which a person, or group of people, travel thorugh time through supernatural (rather than technological) means. As with all paranormal phenomena , the objective reality of such experiences is disputed.

- A time slip is an event where it appears that some other era has briefly intruded on the present. A time slip seems to be spontaneous in nature and localization, but there are places on the planet that seem to be more prone than others to time slip events. As well, some people may be more inclined to experience time slips than others.

~♥~♥~♥~♥~~♥~♥~♥~♥~

Now let’s take a look at time slips. Time slips are also a hypothesis that is out there. The fact is that time is not linear, and this has been proven. So, it is natural to be able to come up with a number of hypothesis to try to explain certain anomalous phenomena. Time slips have been put into books and movies for some time now. Nobody knows for sure why time slips happen, but there are some pretty bizarre stories on the net about them. Most include interaction with people from the past, who are wearing period clothes and who actually talk back or acknowledge your presence. Most of the people who witness the time slip often report that they feel funny, sounds seem to be absent or muffled, or that they really seem to have stepped into the past as the scene they witness before them does not exist in the present. They know this because they have even returned to the place where they saw this and the houses/buildings/people have seemingly vanished without a trace. Others also report that sometimes the time slip does not show them a scene, but a person. One of these cases involves a clerk at a bookshop. This old man even sold the two women some books, but when they returned the next day to look for him, they discovered that this man was gone and according to the clerk there, had never been seen before. I’ve also read story in a paranormal magazine about an old man appearing in Disneyland, where he gazed at everything in awe. The person who noticed him, even approached him and gave him his remaining tickets so that he could visit the rest of the attractions. Much to his amazement, some time after, this man identified the lost stranger as Alfred Watkins, who had studied ley lines and had published a book about them in 1925. The problem was that Mr. Watkins had died long ago and this man had seen and talked to him in 1980! (Fate magazine, April 2008 issue)

What about time slips and ghosts, I hear you ask. Well, I have this theory about ghosts. What if the ghosts in question are NOT ghosts but the ACTUAL people who somehow interact with the people in the present? In this case, WE would be the ghosts!!! Does this seem too far-fetched to you? Well, recently on an episode of Ghost Hunters, they actually caught some pretty interesting EVP’s that actually may confirm this theory!

"Ghostly Conversation" Reveal

Notice that the ‘princess’ who is the ghost that is apparently speaking to them, cannot see them, but seems to hear them perfectly. This is especially significant since they do not see her at any time, only hear her when playing back the audio. Time slips refer specifically to visual rather than auditory. So can we consider this example to confirm the theory mentioned above? For now, I would say it confirms that these time slips do seem to occur and in these cases we may very well be disembodied voices to the past human being if it is auditory, and appear as ghosts to them if it is visual!

Fascinating stuff isn’t it? We may very well be the ghosts that we think we see!

In 1997 Lyn lived in a small outback town that was built in 1947 and had changed little since that time.

"I was driving toward the main intersection of the town, when suddenly I felt a change in the air. It wasn't the classic colder feeling, but a change, like a shift in atmosphere. The air felt denser somehow. As I slowed at the intersection, I seemed to be suddenly transported back in time to approximately 1950. The road was dirt, the trees were gone and coming toward me to cross the intersection was an old black car, something like a Vanguard or old FJ Holden. As the car passed through the intersection the driver was looking back at me in total astonishment before he accelerated. From what I could see he was dressed in similar 1950s fashion, complete with hat.

"This whole episode lasted perhaps 20 seconds and was repeated at least 5 times during my time there, always at the exact spot. I tried to make out the registration plate number but the car was covered in dust."

Lyn wondered if there is someone out there still living who remembers seeing a strange sight at the intersection back in the 50s...of a weird car with a bug-eyed woman at the wheel.

Derek E. tells another interesting time slip story. When he was a child, his father was a taxi driver in Glasgow, Scotland. One day in the late 1960s, Derek's father was driving in the north of the city along Maryhill Road near Queen's Cross, one of the older parts of town and once its own separate community outside the city.

"One minute it was now," Derek wrote, "cars, buses, modern clothes, tarmac roads etc. - and the next thing my dad knew he was in some earlier time. It was certainly pre-Victorian given the clothes he described people wearing, horses, rough road, lower buildings, people in rough clothes and bonnets etc. It lasted as long as it took him to be aware of it and then it vanished and he was back in 'now.'"

Derek also reported that in the 1980's, he and his wife were on a driving holiday in the North York Moors in England. They went to a tiny coastal village called Staithes, which had a steep winding and narrowing road down to the harbor, with the entrance to the houses and narrow footway at a higher level of three or four feet.

"We parked at the top of the village, hamlet really, where the tourist buses and cars had to stop and made our way down on foot. What I remember is a brilliantly sunny day with lots of other people around, but as we made our way down, it just suddenly seemed as if no one else were there but my wife and me. An old woman appeared on the footway opposite us. It became cooler and duller. She asked, in what seemed to me an old-fashioned and very polite way, what year it was. Now lots of old people get confused and it could have been that, but what I remember vividly is her black clothes - handmade, rough and with hand-sewn buttons - really big compared with modern ones. Her shoes were very old fashioned with much higher and chunkier heels than you'd see an older person wearing nowadays. In the time it took me to turn to my wife and say, 'Did you see that?' she was gone. The sun was back and so were all the people. My wife had also seen the same old woman and felt the same chill."

Derek's experience seems strikingly similar to traditional ghost stories. Many ghost sightings are readily explained as individuals who appear out of their normal location or time; but often the ghost also seems to change the surroundings of the witness, giving the impression of a time slip. What is open to question is whether these are glimpses into another time or does the witness or the ghost actually travel in time? Perhaps it is simply different sides of the same coin.

"It is interesting to note that on August 10, 1901, the day of Annie Moberly and Eleanor Jourdain's experience, electrical storms were recorded over Europe and the atmosphere was heavy with electricity. Could this have led to an alteration in the local temporal field around Versailles?"

Perhaps there is a natural phenomenon that under the right conditions and location can produce briefly a doorway to another time and place. Even though this may sound outrageous, this natural "time machine" could show that modern concepts and perceptions of time need to be seriously reconsidered. It may be that the past and even the future might be closer then thought with current scientific theories. With the right frame of mind and the right natural conditions, the barriers of time and space that have traditionally kept mankind locked into place may finally be broken, allowing the mysteries of the world and the universe to be finally revealed.

Then there is the strange story told by members of the Palmetto Sharpshooters, a group of Virginia Civil War re-enactors, when they were camping on the night of June 5, 1996 on the southern edge of the Piedmont battlefield, waiting to celebrate the annual anniversary observance of the battle that occurred there.

At about 5 o’clock in the morning the camp was rudely awakened by the sound of approaching horses and wagons. “You could hear chains rattling. You could hear horses whinnying. You could hear hooves pounding. You could hear wagon wheels creaking,” said member Don Windley.

At first the Sharpshooters thought they were being paid a surprise visit by another group of re-enactors. Some of the men actually walked toward the forest to greet the wagons as they came into camp. But when they reached the forest line, all the wagon movement and sounds stopped. For two or three seconds there was a dead silence. Then the birds began chirping and the forest came back to life.

The next morning the men searched that woods and found no road that the wagons could have traveled, and no sign that anything was disturbed. Close examination revealed the trace of an old road that had been there at the time of the actual battle.

Then there is the peculiar story about Orion Williamson, a Selma, Alabama farmer, who disappeared in front of his wife and two other people while walking out in his field in broad daylight. The incident happened in 1854 as Williamson was attempting to fetch his grazing horses.

At the time Williamson was walking across his field, a neighbor, Armour Wren and his son were passing in a buggy. Wren said he raised his hand to wave at Williamson and at that moment, Williamson abruptly disappeared. He was there one moment and gone the next. A thorough search of the field and the area failed to turn up any sign of him. Williamson was never seen again.

The Williamson story was so sensational it attracted the attention of journalists from all over the country. Among them was Ambrose Bierce, who later became one of America’s best known authors.

So what is going on here? It seems that time for those of us trapped in a three-dimensional existence is a means for us to measure our existence in this place, and get some perspective on an occurrence of events. If it is a creation within the matrix of our minds, then time is only an illusion. Thus it may be possible for people to step through time warps and catch glimpses of the past, or even step into another moment in time and not return.

Ghost hunter and author, Joan Forman collected many reports time slips from around the UK. One example concerns a Warder who was on duty in the Byward Tower, at the main entrance to the Tower of London. One night, he looked up to see five or six Beefeaters from a much earlier time, seated round a log fire, smoking pipes. Not only that, the whole room had altered in appearance. The room reverted back to its original state when the warder left the room and returned moments later. Forman gathered such an amount of evidence she was able to publish “Masks of Time," a book dedicated to this phenomena.

Forman’s interest in Time Slips took her to Haddon Hall in Derbyshire, where she was to have a Time Slip of her own and allow her to develop the theory of the ‘trigger factor’.

Joan entered the courtyard of Haddon Hall, pausing to admire the architecture. Without warning she ‘saw’ a group of four children playing at the top of the stairs, a girl about nine years old caught the attention of Joan. She had shoulder-length blonde hair, a white Dutch hat and a long green-grey silk dress with a white collar. Joan watched with fascination the children playing in the yard “fully aware that she was not seeing with the physical eye, yet conscious of watching real action.

Joan decided to find the identity of the oldest child and entered the Hall looking at every family portrait. In the middle of the ancestral paintings, a picture of the girl she had seen was hung; it was Lady Grace Manners who died in the 1640’s.

The trigger factor occurs when one is interested in their surroundings but not concentrating on them; a slip occurs at a precise place and moment and the witness is thrust seemingly, into another time.

At Leeds Castle in Kent, Alice Pollock experienced what could be called a 'classic' time slip. Alice was experimenting in the Henry VIII's rooms by touching objects in an attempt to experience events from another time. After a period of receiving no impressions whatsoever, the room suddenly changed. The room lost its modern, comfortable appearance to become cold and bare. The carpet had disappeared and there were now logs burning on the fire. A tall woman in a white dress was walking up and down the room; her face seemed in deep concentration. Not long after the room returned to its original state.

By researching in history it’s was found that the rooms had been the prison of Queen Joan of Navarre, Henry V's stepmother and had been accused of witchcraft by her husband.

With a wealth of information available on time slips in books and the internet, many of the cases quoted are often quite old and occurred at least thirty years ago. One case that has recently come to public attention is that of an off duty policeman.

In July 1996, in Liverpool’s Bold Street, an off duty Merseyside Policeman inadvertently travelled back in time

While shopping with his wife in the city centre, one Saturday afternoon, Frank and his wife split up to buy from different shops, Carol his wife went to Dillon’s Bookshop, while Frank went to a local record store.

A small 1950’s box van crossed in front of Frank, honking his horn in its progress. The van’s livery stated it was from “Caplan’s". He looked down to his feet, and realised he stood in the middle of the road.

Frank crossed the road and saw that 'Dillon’s Book Store' now had 'Cripps' over its entrances and moreover, the shop was selling women’s handbags and shoes rather than books.

Photobucket

Looking around the street, Frank realised that the people he could see were dressed in the fashions from the 1940’s but strangely a young woman in her 20’s walked past him with a popular brand named handbag. This reassured him that he was partially in 1996; he smiled at the girl as she walked past and entered ‘Cripps.’

As he followed her into the store, the interior of the building changed in a flash to that of Dillon’s Bookshop in 1996. Frank questioned the young woman who had entered with him into ‘Cripps’, she confirmed that she too thought the shop was a clothes shop rather than a bookshop.

It has been recently proved that 'Cripps' and 'Caplan's' were actual businesses based in Liverpool during the 1950's, whether they were based in the locations specified in the story has not been confirmed.

Frank’s sighting offers numerous questions, if indeed it is true. Did the box van driver see Frank as a ghost something wearing strange clothing while standing in the middle of the street? Did other shopper’s see him acting ‘strange’ outside the ‘Cripps’ store in the 1950’s? If he did appear, we have no record of anybody reporting such a sighting, which is a shame considering the implications if there were witnesses.

Time Slips can occur on two different levels, one being the possible reincarnation of that person, who recognises the surroundings they are visiting in this life. Another is when the slip is triggered by the witness, whether they blank their mind at a precise moment and the slip occurs, or the witness touches something that holds the memory of a previous time. Time Slips seem to have happened for many years, and viewing Frank’s story they will continue for many more.

He Got There Before He Arrived

We are used to time progressing in a linear fashion, one event leading to another. Strangely, it doesn’t always work like that. Consider the experience of Eula White in rural Alabama when she was a young girl in the 1920s.

“In those days,” Eula says, “rural Alabama was still kind of backward. Little electricity, and horses and wagons the only transportation for many farm folk. I remember it was a bright summer day. Early that morning the other women and I had gathered on the front porch of the Hawkins' farmhouse to shell quite a few bushels of peas and beans.

“About mid-afternoon we were still on the porch shelling peas. We looked up and saw Mr. Hawkins approaching the house. Thrown across the saddle in front of him was a large white, cloth sack of flour, and cradled in his left arm was a brown bag of other groceries. We watched as he rode up to the gate, and he stopped there, waiting for someone to open it. One of the boys ran to the gate and opened it. Then, in full view of all of us women and children, Mr. Hawkins vanished! He just disappeared, instantly!

“We sat there for a second or so, just astonished. Then, terrified, we began screaming. After a few minutes, we calmed down, but were still shaking and confused. We just didn't know what to do. So after a while we went back to shelling peas. Mrs. Hawkins made one the boys close the gate.

“About a half hour later, we looked up and again saw Mr. Hawkins riding toward the house with that same white sack of flour across the saddle in front of him and that same brown bag of groceries in his left hand. Again he rode up to the gate without a sound and stopped. None of us had the nerve to open the gate. We were all just too afraid to move. We just sat there staring at him, waiting to see what would happen next. Finally, to our relief, Mr. Hawkins spoke: ‘Well, is someone going to open the gate for me?’ Mr. Hawkins got there before he arrived.”

Journey to the Past...

The most amazing experiences of slips in time, perhaps, are those in which people actually see, hear and even interact with other people and things that seem to have been in another space and time.

John was a six-year-old in Stoke-on-Trent, England when his brush with the past occurred. He was on his way to school with his friend when they stopped to watch some builders working on some new houses. As they approached the site, they noticed an old cottage nearby. An old lady came out and offered John and his friend some lemonade, and they went into her house.

After leaving the cottage, they continued on to school, only to discover that it was almost 4 o'clock and school was just closing. They had left home at 1:30 p.m. on a journey that should have taken about 20 minutes!

The next day, John and his friend took the same route to school, but to their amazement there was no sign of any cottage or the old lady they had seen the previous day.

The only explanation seems to be that John and his friend experienced some sort of time slip in which for a few hours they were transported back to an earlier time when indeed a cottage – and its occupant – did exist on that land.

...and to a Future City

Photobucket

As strange as it was, it may be easier to understand John’s experience with something that has already taken place than it is to comprehend Daisy’s encounter with a place that doesn’t yet exist – and may not for centuries.

Daisy and her friend Rick were driving to another friend’s house in September of 2004 in Rick's beat up old truck. “Suddenly, the truck's engine died and Rick and I were stranded on a deserted highway in the middle of the night,” Daisy says. "We were surrounded on both sides of the road by cornfields that stretched into the distance.

“Rick began a desperate effort to restart the truck, but nothing seemed to work. We decided to walk to the nearest town about two miles away to find a payphone to call our friend. We walked for what seemed like hours and the town was nowhere in sight.

“However, just when desperation was about to grip us, we saw a light, a gloriously bright light, shining over the steep hill ahead of us. We ran up the hill that blocked us from the light and were flabbergasted by what we saw. Just over the hill, Rick and I saw what could only be described as a futuristic city with lights streaming out of every window of the massive, metallic towers. In the middle of the futuristic city was a huge silver dome.

“I stared at the city, stunned, until Rick elbowed me, which pulled me out of my trance and he pointed to the sky. Hovering above the city were hundreds of hovercraft. One flew toward us with amazing speed.

“Rick and I were so scared that we took off running back to the broken down truck. I never looked back, but I felt someone watching me the whole way. When we got back to the truck, it started without difficulty. Rick and I took off as fast as we could in the opposite direction. We never went back or spoke of it again to this day.”
